I have emailed GO transit and asked about express service. They told me that they are only allowed (by CP) to run 6 trains to union in the morning and 6 trains back in the evening. To have express service they would have to decrease service to some of the other stations which they are not willing to do.

As far as the speed, I agree that the Milton line is painfully slow but my freinds brother is a train engineer and he has told her that the speed is determined by the area the train runs through. It will move slower is it goes trough residential areas due to the noise as well as if it goes over a lot of over passes and bridges.

I also seem to recall there is some track limitations on speed, I believe the Milton line is of lower quality, or more prone to track issues, as they often will announce speed adjustments in extream heat.

There are 3 factors which affect the time the Milton train takes, 1) is train speed, 2) is # of stops and 3) length of track. The Milton line is legitmatly longer then the length of line from the parallel station on the lakeshore line. I'm to lazy to do the calculations, but it isn't a trivial distance.

the biggest problem is the three brigdes on the track between Milton and Union.

Till the brigde are expanded no addtional GO service will be concidered.

I can't seem to find the artical i am quoting from, but it said that it will be at least 20 years before all the brigdes and tracks are expanded enough to support addtional services.

Adding additional cars is ok...but it doesnt solve the problem. The congestion problem in Toronto is getting worse as time goes on. My office is downtown and I would take the train in more if it had more flexible times to get there.

If there was an earlier train in the afternoon ... one more train in the morning ... those would help but if its just a couple more cars I dont think its going to make people us the trains more.

As one of the other posters mentioned, they need to improve the traffic AT Union in order to accomodate more lines and give GO a chance to have all day service in the future to Milton and other growing regions.

Maybe if they include an express train to Union from Milton...even that would be better. I dont know all the logistics behind having an express train...but that would be a suggestion Id have and an incentive to use it daily.

This will not fix the milton problem, Milton's problem is that CP makes more money on freight then on commuter passanger trains, and has zero interest in cutting back on freight to allow more commuter trains.

All the enhancements at Union will not fix this.

At this point I don't think GO is looking to entice more people to take the Milton train. Honestly, I think they are just trying to accomodate the people who currently ride on this line. The trains are PACKED, particularly the ones they are adding cars to first. There were times this past winter that I actually got off the first train leaving Union because there were so many people packed into the cars that I felt like I couldn't breathe.

In the winter the roads were so bad that many extra people decided to take the train instead of drive, and I personally felt it was too hazardous to try and drive out to Oakville.

I am thrilled that they are adding more cars!

I realize people have different comfort conditions for driving in bad weather, but as a matter of necessity I'm forced to either drive or take the Lakeshore line. (No other reasonable way to get to Exhibition Go Station.) But I drove to Oakville every day this winter, and I'd say that only 2-3 of the days had the roads not been cleared/safe by the time I was on them (6:40 am.) Of those days one of them was the one that the police services asked everyone to not drive on (yeah heard that on the radio half way to oakville and said "no sh*t.")

The Lakeshore line isn't much better from a crowding perspective, but you do make up for it in more options (except to the Ex.) The down side is the $50 you save each month on your ticket you spend on gas... and the commute is about the same length, maybe a tic shorter, but you spend half of it in a car, but typically without traffic.

Driving to the Bronte station might be an option for me. The whole thing about this form of transit is that you dont want to drive somewhere to take a train to save a car from the highway.

Theres going to be times, being in the business Im in where Im going to have to take my car as I dont work FT in an office downtown.

Its a tough decision to make and while the governments spend so much money on public transit, it doesnt fit the needs of a lot of commuters.

I have to take the train downtown tomorrow... probably the 7.23 train. I haven't taken the milton line in years, so how bad is it now? I keep seeing people saying that its packed. Is it packed already at Milton or just packed by the time everyone is on at Dixie. And is the milton station as bad as erindale is - i.e. can't find a parking spot after 7am?
