The use and care guide for my Maytag gives cleaning suggestions, so I suspect most others do too.

It said to clean the seal with a solution of bleach & warm water (1cup/2cups), and to run it for a full cycle with a full bleach dispenser on hot. I think it said every 60 to 90 days.

It's called Affresh, you can check it out and buy it through here: http://www.affresh.ca/

I carry the Affresh product at the Sears store here in town. The advice to leave the door open after a load is good and it will help avoiding the smell. If the smell comes anyway then the Affresh product seems to clear it up.

i have a maytag neptune, 4 years old and had issues with mold collecting on the rubber gasket. i did some research and found out that there was actually a class action lawsuit against maytag about this. luckily for me i purchased an extended warranty from the brick and they came and replaced the gasket.

We just had someone in to service out dishwasher and I asked him about the smell in the front loader. He said that yes you should always leave the door open when not in use and that using a liquid detergent causes things to build up. A powder detergent will help to break down any residue left in the machine- which makes sense. We have yet to swtich to a powder, as I keep forgetting until I go to do a load of laundry!!!

He also mentioned that once a year you should do a load with hot water, no clothes but just and Vinager to disinfect the machine. Just like you should do with your coffee machine.

The smell in ours is not THAT bad, just a tad bit musty, and our clothes never smell like it. Maybe they will start if we don't try something now.

check your manual...it will tell you that you need to run bleach through the washer on a certain cycle every few months...this works like a charm...along with keeping the door open.

This could be true. I have never had a problem with smell in my front loader. I always use bleach when washing my whites. Maybe this is why!!!
