Hawthorne Village, Milton

The Hawthorne Villager - Bringing people together

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

October 25, 2011 will be the day of Milton's next municipal election. Due to the recent ward boundary changes, this election will be much different than ones in the past. If you look at the old ward system for Milton the new residential development had less than 1/4th representation on town council. The areas comprising Hawthorne Village were in the old ward 1 which also included rural areas of Milton.

Old ward map

The new ward map is different. Hawthorne Village is now spread out amongst wards 1, 6, 7 and 8. Hawthorne Villagers will be voting in wards that will end up comprising almost 50% of the new town council. Keep in mind I'm including the Hollybank, Jasper Village & Coscorp communities in my definition of "Hawthorne Village". Basically the part of town where people commonly refer to themselves as living within the Hawthorne Village area.

There will be a very good chance that this time councillors will be elected who actually live within Hawthorne Village.

Map of where town councillors currently live <-- Thanks to Zeeshan Hamid for creating this map.

Please keep in mind Milton currently has some excellent local and regional councillors who do help people in Hawthorne Village (Colin Best is a great example). But it would nice to have some representation on council of people who actually live in these newly developed areas of Milton. The viewpoint of someone living in Hawthorne Village on issues (traffic for one) may very well be different than other parts of town.
